Bebop trumpet legend Carl Saunders and I talked of many things. His mom moved him out of L.A. to get him away from the temptations of the music biz. Ooops; that didn't really work out.
Carl was born on the road with his uncle's band; he spent a year as a motherless child; he got fired by Buddy Rich. Wait a minute - everybody's been fired by Buddy Rich. We had such a good time that we hung out talking for an hour after the recording stopped; I'll have to have him back for an encore.
