Episode 6 - Sam Most

Sam Most on the couch tonight.  Grew up in Atlantic City until parents moved the family to NYC to avoid a kidnapping threat against Sam - or his twin sister; it wasn't clear who they were after.  Yipes!  Sam's made a living as a pure jazzman. That's not easy in L.A.

Eposode 5 - Phil Ranelin

Trombonist/activist/composer/educator; Phil Ranelin has a lot to talk about.  He came up with Freddy Hubbard; he played with Wes Montgomery in Indianapolis.  He worked for Motown duing the heyday in Detroit and then had his own record label - in the sixties.  He was in the studio yesterday for a great talk.  I'll be posting that on Sunday, as usual.

Talking to tenor sax/flutist/scat-singer Sam Most next Monday, and expecting stories about Buddy Rich (although pretty much everyone has a Buddy story...) and my old friend and great late guitar master Al Viola. Leonard Feather called Sam Most the first "truly creative jazz flutist," and I won't disagree with that.

Next week, it's a guitar summit with me and Barry Zweig and Ron Anthony.

Episode 4 - Pete Christlieb

Pete came by and we talked about his 20 years with the band on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show, working with Al Cohn and Woody Herman, the the time Pearl Baily beat him up, and his new CD with the Tall and Small Band featuring trombonist (and wife) Linda Small.

Episode 3 - Carl Saunders

Bebop trumpet legend Carl Saunders and I talked of many things.  His mom moved him out of L.A. to get him away from the temptations of the music biz. Ooops; that didn't really work out.

Carl was born on the road with his uncle's band; he spent a year as a motherless child; he got fired by Buddy Rich. Wait a minute - everybody's been fired by Buddy Rich.  We had such a good time that we hung out talking for an hour after the recording stopped; I'll have to have him back for an encore.

Tomorrow I'm talking to Pete Christleib.

Enjoy!

Still no iTunes...new guest lined up

Still trying to make the feed work.  This is a lot more hassle that I was expecting.

New guest coming in next week - sax man and dragster owner Pete Christlieb.  We play together in the Monktet and other bands.  He's got a great band with his wife, trombonist Linda Small - the Tall and Small Band - and a new CD to plug, so I'm looking forward to it.

The show with Ron Anthony and Barry Zweig will record later in the month as travel plans got in the way, but I'm going to try to do a show in that slot next week with another guest.  Watch for the deets about that.
